This is ‘Beyond Boscowen’, a mixed media on canvas painting (80x100cm). Boscowen is a small hamlet which I can see from my house and from my studio and is therefore a continually reinforced part of my visual memory. The composition is dominated by a strong contrast between a thundery, deep blue grey sky and a bright yellow field with a pale grey (almost white) granite track, farm building and stone ‘hedge’. The painting belongs to a series of paintings that I have made since Covid when I spent many hours drawing in my local environment including the fields surrounding us that were planted with daffodils. That large series of small drawings were constrained, by choice, to yellow, black and white using only three pencils/crayons. I soon became obsessed with the power of the relationship between black, white and yellow and have since continued with this limited palette to a large extent. The painting is planned to be part of my solo show at Thackeray Gallery in London next March.
