This is another one of those pieces that take months to complete. Its only a 30x30cm canvas but there’s a lot going on and much that has been obliterated, reworked or developed. My emphasis was on composition, as always, but also on mark making. For richness and variety I have contrasted fine line drawing, collage and paint applied with both brush and knife. The painting features a recurring theme in my work – dilapidated Cornish granite ‘hedges’. I think it would work well on a larger scale but copying a painting is a certain way of destroying its vitality. I may, at some time in the future, try to develop some of the ideas contained in this picture on a larger scale but will have to bear in mind that the mark making tools and techniques will have to be modified in order to maintain their impact and spontaneity.
