No title yet, this 40x40cm mixed media on canvas painting inhabits that space occupied by ‘painting’ on one side and ‘drawing’ on the other. Regular visitors to this blog will know about my current exploration into the theme of boundaries, usually manifest by dilapidated boundaries in the Cornish landscape. West Cornwall has a particularly challenging climate when it comes to maintaining boundaries. Entropy is certainly hard at work here and the forces that tend toward chaos are strong.
I’d like to bring some of those forces to bare in breaking down the boundaries that separate drawing from painting. Their definitions may be important to theorists and critics but for practitioners they are an unnecessary and inhibiting irrelevance. I am a painter who, unfashionably draws a lot and puts a high value on its practice and also enjoys using drawing processes in the act of painting. It frees my creative mind. Drawing is often a preliminary exploration but its necessary to expand its opportunities.
This is all a bit of a stream of conciousness. When I can articulate my thoughts better I’ll let you know!
