My recent passion for painting gannets started when I noticed the brilliant contrast that their pure white and jet black wings make when they skim across the sea. I have only used the rocks to increase the contrast chromatically and tonally, but what the birds have, which the rocks don’t, is a beautiful, balletic movement. Who, as a child didn’t dream of being able to fly. As humans we have to live, like the rocks, with the restrictions of an earthbound existence. We are like the rocks but wish we were like the gannets.
80x100cm mixed media on canvas. This painting is going to Cornwall Contemporary Gallery in Penzance later this month.
