I find that my studio work moves in cycles. I have recently been in ‘developing’ mode. At the moment I’m in ‘finishing’ mode. During this period I’m satisfied that the basic idea, colour and composition are working well but I’m not yet satisfied that it is complete. Usually its a question of making sure that the painting has clarity and that nothing can be changed, added or removed for maximum clarity and impact. (Clarity doesn’t mean that there should be no ambiguity). Sometimes something that needs to be changed is the richness of the painting surface.
In this 76x76cm painting of a stubble field I think I may have arrived at that final destination. Several more are waiting for my attention and I’m in the mood to progress them before I start some new ones.
