Cornish hedges quickly become dilapidated and chunks of granite often litter the ground all around them. When ancient clifftop meadows have been too difficult to cultivate for a long time then dilapidation is inevitable unless they are conserved by someone. I’m fascinated by these boundaries that are soon no longer boundaries. As painting is, amongst other things, a depiction of space, then the boundary between one place and an adjacent one defines space on the picture surface. I think if that boundary is ambiguous it leads to a richer experience for the viewer. One colour leaks through another. Trees areĀ sometimes allowed to grow in these almost forgotten landscapes but they too are not permanent. This is especially true of Monterey Pines which rarely get the chance to grow old.
