One of the challenges I’m encountering in my endeavours to portray rooks is that my subject is, to all intents and purposes, black. Colour embodies an expressive potential, so if there is none in my subject, then I shall have to utilise the background, or ‘negative space.’ This is a 30x30cm painting on a wood panel where I have tried to do that. Its a small step on the way but I’m pleased with it.
