I really enjoy finding a new use for discarded mixing palettes.  The completely random colours, textures and marks are an interesting beginning for a painting.  Its often an exciting challenge to leave as much of the board in the state that it was in as a palette.  A very worthy form of up-cycling, I think.  Click on the image for the full picture.
